A teacher like me or a student like me? Role model versus teacher bias effect
نویسنده
چکیده
Several studies have found that teacher–student gender matching has positive effects on student achievement. However, the underlying mechanisms that explain this effect have not been empirically explored. This paper studies the impact of same gender teachers on academic achievement for a large sample of 8th graders in Chile. I provide evidence that girls benefit from being assigned to female teachers, while there is no negative effect on boys. More importantly, I provide evidence that the positive effect is due to role model effects and not to teacher bias effects. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Tel.: +56 2 2978 3635. Reader Response ~ - - Rene Girard and the Dynamics of Imitation , Scapegoating
Richard Boyd's "Reading Student Resistance" and his earlier JAC article "Imitate Me; Don't Imitate Me" have convinced me that Rene Girard's theory of mimetic desire may have much to teach us about the dynamics of composition. Both articles offer an impressive analysis of imitation as a moment of coercion and "double bind" for students and teacher. In my view, Boyd's most significant insight con...

Infants exploit the perception that others are 'like me' to bootstrap social cognition (Meltzoff, 2007a). This paper demonstrates how the above theory can be instantiated in a social robot that uses itself as a model to recognize structural similarities with other robots; this thereby enables the student to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate teachers. This is accomplished by the ...
